1. What is The New Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog?
The New Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog, or TNAoSTH for short, is a chat room series loosely based on the Sonic universe that was founded by Junkaholic95 and co-founded by Stormy41992 August 3, 2008. Ever since episode 15, all episodes are completely improvised based on previously written suggestions in a similar fashion to Whose Line is it Anyway. Prior to this, episodes were made up completely on the spot with little rhyme or reason. To see the show, just sign up for our Proboards site and a "Chat" button will become available at the top of the page.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Where does the name come from?
The name comes from the 1993 cartoon show "The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog." We just stuck "New" in the title and bingo!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. How was the idea of the show born?
It's a funny story. It was after Whose Line at the now defunct TPIR 'XX chat room and we were bored. In complete humor, Junkaholic95 decided to be Junkzilla and pretended to destroy the "studio" and the city. According to Junkzilla, only one thing could defeat him. Stormy41992 responded by pretending to be Sonic. Soon, more Sonic characters appeared in that little moment. The entire thing was supposed to be purely a joke but we eventually decided that this would count as the pilot episode of the series (Episode 1: The Lightning Chronicles). Not long after, we did it again and it seemed successful so we kept doing it and we've been doing it ever since.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Is there a cast?
Yes. We do have a regular cast of actors that currently includes Junkaholic95, KoopaKid17, and FieldsFan336. See question 13 for information regarding how to become a performer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Is the series separated into seasons?
No. Since this is a year round series that follows 1 long story line, we don't see the need to divide it up into seasons. Instead, the Table of Contents thread in the recap section is divided by the calendar year.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Do the Sonic characters have a relation with the Sega and/or Archie versions of such characters?
While they all have the same basic defensive and attacking abilities (Sonic's Spin Dash and Amy's Piko Piko Hammer, for example), they are pretty much in little relation other than those things. Sonic and Amy are married and have 4 children, but basically they still act the same as most people are familiar with. We just tweak their personalities a bit to suit our needs. We generally don't follow the Archie/SatAM characters (save for a few) though they occasionally appear. We tend to stick more to the Sega universe though we give it our own twist to suit our own needs. Keep in mind this is purely fiction so it doesn't need to match the "official" story. For example, everyone is *older than their official Sega age. The whole "Amy having a baby" premise is how this whole series started. Having a baby wasn't planned; it just happened. One thing led to another and, next thing you know, Sonic finally gives in, but it doesn't really change anything. He still has adventures, has the same friends, and still does things his own way. The only difference is he now has fatherly duties to take care of in between and, so far, it's led to some pretty funny moments. That said, if you have your own ideas, submit them and we'll see if we like them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. *Okay... so how much older?
The characters were 10 years older as of 2006 when Lightning was born. Add one more for every year of his age to their official Sega age. So if X = Character's Sega age and Y = Lightning's current age, the formula is 10 + X + Y = TNAoSTH age. Note that characters age in real time and their profiles will be updated to reflect it annually unless they have a given birthdate.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. It says Lightning was born in 2006 but didn't the show start in 2008?
Yes. During the first few months of the show we just skipped time ahead to suit our needs thinking we'd only do a few episodes then never speak of this show again. However, when it became obvious we were going to be doing this a long time, we decided to make the show advance in semi-real time and have the characters be whatever age they would be at the time the episode is happening. To fix the newly created age problem with Lightning, we decided that the first episode took place in 2006 and that the first several episodes leading to his second birthday took place over the course of 2 years and from there out the timeline followed real time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. When are the characters' birthdays?
For the time being, only main characters created specifically for the show have official birth dates with a few exceptions. The ages of the rest of the characters are usually updated in November since that marks Lightning's birthday and that event was the plot of the first episode. Check their profiles in the Character Index.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. Does music have an involvement in the show?
Sort of. The show is performed in a text-based environment so obviously we can't play any music during the show. Despite this, the characters "sing" quite often for various comedic reasons. (See next question for further explanation.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
11. So if it's all text, how does it work exactly?
Our chat software allows users to change names on the fly so each of our performers gets into character when a scene calls for it. If an action needs to be expressed, it's marked in asterisks. [Ex: *hits Silver with piko hammer*] Update: A recent update in the Xat chat now italicizes anything put between asterisks like so. [Ex: hits Silver with piko hammer] Scene changes are marked with dashes. Ex: -Meanwhile in Station Square- Singing is indicated with note symbols. Ex: ♪In his world, where one is all...♪
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
12. Do I have to act if I come to the show?
Not at all! If you'd rather just watch, you're more than welcome to do so. Acting isn't for everyone but if you feel you've got something of value to contribute, see the next question.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
13. How do I become a performer?
If you attend regularly and express an interest in performing, we'll put you through our audition process and if you're lucky, we'll add you to the cast.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
14. I missed an episode but I want to know what happened! What do I do?
Good news! You can always look at our episode recaps which clearly explain what happened in past episodes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
15. The recaps don't make sense! Could you explain them and their purpose?
Since the show is done live in a text-based chat room, the recaps were created so any who missed an episode could see what happened or for anyone who just wants to look back for a laugh or 3. All recaps contain a plot summary, a list of fun facts, and a list of performers and characters. Recaps are usually done in the following format:
Most recaps over the years have been written by either Stormy41992 or KoopaKid17 with Junkaholic95 filling in occasionally. The main body of the recap is usually written by the primary recapper with the "Fun Facts" and "Cast" sections added by Junkaholic95.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
16. What's with the long list of future episode selections? When are you gonna do those?
We choose randomly from that list and it's always changing. You never know when we'll do one. That's why you keep coming back to see if we picked the one you want to see. Submit a few of your own if you like.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
17. How do you determine which ones get used?
Episodes are picked for the following week at the conclusion of the show of the current week. Each week 2 cast members from a rotation will make their choices and the 2 choices are then voted on by all in attendance at the start of the next show. The rotation is currently as follows: Junkaholic95/KoopaKid17, KoopaKid17/FieldsFan336, FieldsFan336/Junkaholic95, and so on. If a cast member is not in attendance on a given week, the next available one in the sequence will substitute them. Voting occurs before the start of the show. Votes are submitted by everyone in attendance to Junkaholic95 via the "Private Chat" function and will be posted upon receiving everyone's votes. If there's a tie, Junkaholic95, who does not participate in the initial vote, casts the deciding vote.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
18. What about the green ones at the bottom, are those eligible for voting?
Those are special episodes reserved for holidays and/or special events occurring on certain weeks and are not part of the random selection. See the Episode Schedule for details.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
19. How has the show evolved?
For more information, visit our TNAoSTH History Journal.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
20. Any chance of doing a more traditional Sonic show?
We tried starting a spin-off series based more on the SatAM line of characters. Unfortunately, that idea flopped. Maybe we'll try again some day with a new idea.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
21. How will Sonic Boom or the Ben Schwartz/Jim Carrey movies fit into the canon of this show?
As for Sonic Boom, other than being mocked relentlessly, it won't. As for the movies, we acknowledge that they exist as movies but we won't be introducing any original characters from them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
22. I see these TNAoSTH Classics from past decades and "international versions" popping up from time to time, what's up with that?
These are non-canon spoofs of pop culture from the respective decades/countries they take place in. We've discovered they're some of our favorite things to do and since they wouldn't fit into the normal story line any other way, we usually reserve them for anniversary specials or something similar. In reality, this show started in 2008 and is based out of the US and Canada since that's where our performers reside.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
23. I see this Game Show Tournament thing from summer 2015, how did that work?
Very simply, the game play was completely fake and acted out just like any other episode with all questions made up on the spot. No actual money or prizes were awarded. The only semi-real element of it was we had no idea what characters would win what games.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
24. Why so many "specials" all over the schedule?
We typically like to cover the major holidays most people celebrate plus it's fun to come up with new themed episodes every year. We also like to acknowledge milestone episodes such as our 100th, 200th, etc and the show's anniversary. In past years we also did "specials" for the birthdays of the different children that we've introduced. However, as of 2017 we no longer do this as it's begun to over-saturate the schedule and take away from our regular episodes. Instead, we try to pick 2 stories from the list of regular ideas that include that character as a way to acknowledge them. Lastly, as a small token of appreciation for our cast members, we let each of them pick the week's episode on the date closest to their birthday.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
25. Mario plz?
We tried to start a Mario spin-off series but it never took off. Mario isn't really our thing but we do include characters from the Mario universe from time to time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
26. I have an idea for an episode, can I/how do I submit it?
See >>this<< thread for details.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
27. What's with the constant adding children?
Partly to create the effect of the characters having real lives, partly to justify the show progressing in semi-real time, and partly to give us more material for writing new ideas. It happens in real life so it can happen in this show. Besides, why make up an adult character and try to shoehorn them into the mix when you can add a child character "naturally" and achieve the same thing?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
28. Sonic driving a car???!!!! NOOOO! Sonic must run always! #NOTMYSONIC
We started allowing characters to drive in this series because that's what people do in the real world and since Sonic, Amy, and several other characters have children, it makes a lot more sense to have some way to haul them all around.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
29. Why is KoopaKid17 listed as recapper on all the episodes now? What happened to the ones written by Stormy41992 and Junkaholic95 pre-2018?
Stormy41992 was the show's original recapper until early 2013 having been replaced by KoopaKid17 starting with "Episode 234 - Dust Hill Zone Lives" thus explaining the noticeable change in how they're written. Throughout 2012, Stormy was around less and less frequently which was the primary reason for the change. He eventually left the show entirely after "Episode 257 - Bad at Good" thus giving up his roles to the other performers, most notably Sonic to Koopa. In January of 2009 when the original SMF site opened, Junkaholic95 transferred all the existing recaps there himself from the now defunct "Junkaholic Studios" Probards site thus making several early ones appear to be written by him. Similarly, when the site was moved back to Proboards to the new TNAoSTH site in late 2017, Koopa transferred them all thus making them appear under his name. There are 2 recaps that appear under Junkaholic95 due to a transfer error but every episode from 465 onward will be represented by whoever actually recaps it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
30. I've meticulously checked every single recap and the dates aren't all exactly 1 week apart. What sort of operation are you people running here???
The show has jumped around to different nights over the years. Mostly Fridays and Sundays. For a brief while we tried Tuesdays, even Saturdays, but ultimately it ends up on whatever night of the week works the best for all those involved. Sunday was the standard for the longest time but as of 5/4/22 we're back to Sundays until further notice. Also, there have been rare instances when we've done a show on an odd night of the week to make up for missing one on a regular night. Similarly, in the very early days of the show, before it was decided it would become a full-blown series, we just did them on whatever night we all happened to be together. Also, if an episode gets cancelled due to someone not being able to make it or whatever reason, this will also cause a gap in the schedule.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
31. Why do I need an account/approval to see the show live?
Back in the early days there was nothing stopping random chat hoppers from showing up in the middle of the show and disrupting the proceedings. Also, anybody could sign up with a spam account and start posting inappropriate things on the main site so we started requiring all visitors who wish to see the show to register and have their account approved so we know you're a real person and are actually interested in what we do here.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
32. Why do I need to be 18?
The first and most important reason is sometimes this show deals with adult subject matter and we don't want to be responsible for underage children seeing things not appropriate for them. The second reason goes back to our earliest shows. Some of our performers were between the ages of 13 to 17 and were, frankly, annoying as hell. By the age of 18 you should know how to conduct yourself around other human beings. Yes, this is a show about Sonic the Hedgehog which is normally meant for kids but our take on it is anything but kid friendly and there's nothing more irritating than trying to put on a performance when some pubescent teenager on a sugar high wants to change every little thing because they know it all.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
33. Why so many LGBTQ+ characters?
Co-creator of the series, Junkaholic95, happens to belong to said community which plays a big role in it. The other reason is simply because LGBTQ+ people are all around in real life and there is no prejudice here. Characters can be whatever and whoever just like people can in real life.

Fun Facts: Anything noteworthy that happens story or production-wise is listed in this section.
Running Gags: Sometimes a running gag occurs in an episode. Such things will be placed in this section. Note: Use of this section has been less and less frequent as the series has progressed.

Also, if an episode gets cancelled due to someone not being able to make it or whatever reason, this will also cause a gap in the schedule.
