Episode 660 - In the Beginning
Taped: 10/9/22
Plot:
After coming back from visiting Lucy, Lightning has lots of questions to ask Amy. He doesn't know too much about Sonic's origin story, so he wasn't able to answer any of Matthias' probing questions. Amy figures that the time is right for Lightning to hear from Sonic about his origins with his siblings, Tails, and Knuckles. He interrupts Sonic Jr.'s grinding lesson to let him know. Sonic calls up his siblings and Tails so Lightning can understand. Knuckles digs through the floor and brings an unwilling Locke with him. Lightning sits down as Locke gives his account as Angel Island's midwife. He received a phone call from a hedgehog woman close to giving birth, and he was more than happy to oblige. Locke meets this woman in his trailer, a model named Aleena who is seven months pregnant with triplets. She then tells him that she wants the babies put up for adoption because she doesn't want to be a mother. She also wants Locke, despite him being married. Two months later, Aleena gives birth to all three children with Locke's help. She names Sonia after her great-grandmother, Sonic because it sounds like a male equivalent of Sonia and Manic because he looks troublesome. A one-year old Knuckles crawls out of his crib to meet the new arrivals. Locke honors Aleena's task to find a foster home, and he does except it's in the middle of a swamp. Since Locke fulfilled his end of the deal, Aleena allows him to have sex with her in his house with all four babies preoccupied. After Aleena leaves, Locke takes Sonic, Manic, and Sonia to their new home with Knuckles in tow. He meets the foster mother, Mrs. Grunt, and her personality assures him that Aleena's children are in good hands. Seconds after he leaves, Mr. Grunt comes home drunk and hits his wife. Eight years pass, and Sonic has run away from home, literally. Yuji Naka happens by him at a park in Station Square and sees him running inside a jungle gym. He calls Naoto Ohshima and declares that he's found a hedgehog that looks just like his 'Mr. Needlemouse' drawings and thinks they've officially found Sega's new mascot. Yuji stops Sonic and announces his intentions of making him a star. Sonic leads Yuji to his house in the swamp where his foster parents accept the idea: the father for money and the mother because it's what Sonic wants. Sonic is upset with having to leave Manic and Sonia, but Yuji promises that he'll get to see them every so often. Sonic's first game turns out to be a huge success, so Yuji gives Manic and Sonia a Sega Genesis so they can see Sonic any time. A year later, Yuji comes across Tails walking all alone. Tails says he's lost and trying to find his parents. He gives Yuji a description of what they look like, and Yuji finds matches that have died in a fiery car accident. Yuji makes Tails Sonic's sidekick on the spot. Later still, Sonic is able to convince Yuji to add Knuckles to the games after giving him a girlfriend, Amy, in Sonic CD. It then comes full circle in 1999 when Yuji congratulates Sonic on the success of Sonic Adventure. Sonic travels with Knuckles back to Station Square where they talk Manic and Sonia into starring in their own cartoon together. Back in the present, Locke reveals what eventually happened to the Grunts. They gave Manic and Sonia the deed to the swamp when they reached their 18th birthdays. Locke regrets ever having cheated Lara-Le and giving Aleena's children up for adoption, as both events led to them divorcing. Tails adds that Sonic moved them back to Station Square when Sega announced they'd be opening Sega of America. Lightning thanks them for telling the tale, saying he wouldn't have it any other way. He's convinced that Yuji's a better grandfather than Mr. Grunt, to which everyone agrees. A package comes in the mail for Sonic, Manic, and Sonia. Sonic opens it to discover a VHS tape and invites everyone to come back to his house to watch it. On the tape is Aleena, confirming that she put the triplets up for adoption to focus on her modeling career. After retiring from modeling, she became a modeling coach. At the time of making the video, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Her will stipulated that the video be sent to her children after her passing. She ends the video with a simple goodbye. Lightning is upset, thinking that Sonic, Manic, and Sonia got screwed out of ever finding her. Locke gets him to calm down, saying that she may not have wanted to be found. He says he stayed in touch with the triplets because he wanted to make sure they had as good of a life as they could. Tails looks up her gravesite in Denver, and takes Sonic, Manic, and Sonia there so they can pay final respects.
