TNAoSTH Classics: A Salute to Betty White
Taped: 1/14/22
Plot:
Sonic, Knuckles, and Cream pay tribute to Betty White by giving a history of her television career and noting her wit, wisdom, and animal rights activism. They will do one short of her television experience of each decade from the 1950s through the 1990s.
What’s My Line? (1954): Betty White enters and signs in as the Mystery Guest. Dorothy Kilgallen (Blaze) asks if she's involved in motion pictures which gets a no answer. Steve Allen (Knuckles) gets a yes answer upon asking if she's involved in television. Arlene Francis (Cream) asks if she sings to which John Daly clarifies that she does, but it isn't what she's known for. Bennett Cerf (Tails) asks if she's working on a series that's currently in production which gets a yes answer. Betty answers no to Dorothy's question about whether her show's being produced in New York. Betty confirms for Steve that she does shows in Hollywood, and she also answers yes to Arlene asking her about doing variety shows. Bennett takes a guess that she's Betty White, to which she replies that she's been accused of it. She mentions that she's been branching out to other networks, and the panel says that she's got a bright future ahead of her.
Password (1964): Jack Clark introduces the celebrities Betty White and Jack Paar who in turn introduce the contestants: Thomas Patton (Sonic) and Janet Hannigan (Cream) respectively. Allen comes onto the stage where he talks about New York City and the entertainment life with Betty and Jack. Jack is able to get Janet to guess "Vibrator" for eight points, then Thomas scores ten when Betty guesses "Vegetable" with one clue. It takes a while for the next password "Assemble" to be communicated but Thomas gets it for three points. He also communicates "Bake" to Betty for another nine. Thomas gets another nine points for the final password, winning the game. Thomas then gets all five of the Lightning Round passwords in one clue, prompting Allen to ask how long it took. He gets an answer of 31 seconds before giving the Password of the Day: togetherness.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1976): Sue Ann Nivens wraps up The Happy Homemaker by showing off a tuna casserole she cooked. Once the cameras stop rolling, Murray Slaughter (Wyn) remarks that the casserole will replace the housewife someday, to which Sue Ann shoots back by saying he's the one that will be replaced. Murray says he wouldn't serve it on a bad night, and Sue Ann rubs it in by saying he's had plenty of those. Lou Grant (Locke) gets them to stop fighting by saying they have to prepare for the Six O'clock News. Murray can't find Ted's (Silver) cue cards which he needs to aid in pronouncing names. Sue Ann says Ted mispronounced "Rockefeller" the night before because Murray misspelled it. Despite Murray's best efforts, Ted can't say any of the names during the news broadcast. After the cameras stop rolling, Ted wonders why the Soviets can't have normal names. Murray says it's because they're not American.
Mama’s Family (1983): Vinton (Sonic) comes home with a ring of keys, unsure of which one opens his front door because he misplaced his own set. Thelma (Vanilla) warns him that the place better be spotless when Ellen stops by to visit. Buzz (Lightning) and Sonja (Amber) come home, and they start tidying the place up. Naomi (Amy) wonders what the commotion is about, and Vinton tells her about Ellen. She offers to help, and they manage to finish just in time for Ellen to walk inside. She announces that she's been invited to a banquet by the new mayor, and she wants to bring the family over as guests. Vinton and the family marvel about getting to dress up and meet the high life. Once they're there, Vinton is won over by the display of food and Thelma chugs the beer that's being served. Thelma burps in the middle of the mayor's speech which makes Ellen almost too embarrassed to come up when she's called. After the dinner, Ellen remarks that Thelma and the mayor are strangely on good terms. Naomi guesses it's because they both like the same brand of beer.
Golden Girls (1990): Dorothy (Vanilla) sips a margarita as Rose remarks that it's been a good day since Stanley (Vector) hasn't shown up. The doorbell rings, and it's Stanley with a box. Blanche (Cream) and Sophia (Elaine) ask what's in it, and Stanley reveals that he's just come up with something to supplement the Spornie. He takes a miniature pencil sharpener-like object which he's pitching as the "Shiver". The product grinds up chives to sprinkle onto a baked potato. Rose is immediately sold on this, but Dorothy considers it to be a waste of money since she can just use scissors. Stanley offers to sell a Shiver to Rose for half price, saying it can grind other things like dill and mint sprigs. Blanche thinks they should have another round of margaritas just for putting up with Stanley. This gives him an idea to invent something else, so he runs outside. Dorothy slams the door behind him, Rose lamenting not getting a Shiver.
Sonic, Knuckles, and Cream end the show with a montage of clips featuring Betty White set to Cream singing the Golden Girls theme. The final shot is a picture of Betty White and Allen Ludden.
Quotes:
Vinton (Sonic): Wow! Real filet mignon! And this "Perry-er" is fancy, too!
Fun Facts:
None of the shorts featured in this special are canon to the series. Unlike prior installments, this was not a follow-up to previous TNAoSTH Classics. The Password desk is present on the Classics set throughout the episode with lights shining on Betty's chair and Allen's lectern. Knuckles gives a brief tribute to Norm MacDonald, Bob Saget, and John Madden between the first two shorts and gives Sonic a can of Tinactin. All instances of Betty White's characters are shown as herself rather than a character from this show. Golden Girls was featured for the second time on TNAoSTH Classics.
