Episode 626 - The Play's the Thing of Nightmares
Taped: 11/26/21
Plot:
Lightning's live stream is interrupted when Flash plays Vivaldi in his room. Amy comes upstairs with the laundry and advises Flash to pursue some other arts. She suggests the drama club, to which Flash tells her that auditions are coming up in a few days. Flash pays Ms. Glick, the drama teacher, a visit the following morning. She recalls Amy being in a production of Bye Bye Birdie when she was a little girl and is pleased to see Flash following in her footsteps. They also have a discussion about Flash's preferred music choice and how Ms. Glick can't stand modern music. Flash looks the script over with Ms. Glick saying he might be perfect for the role of Cosmo in Singin' in the Rain. Flash prepares for the role by going over some dance steps with Amber and warming up a comedy routine with Sonic Jr. After a few hours of practice, Flash believes he's ready for the audition. He does a stand-up routine and then performs "Make 'em Laugh" with choreography. Ms. Glick is impressed by the audition, but she offers for him to do something extra. Flash sings the opening bars of "Crocodile Rock", and Ms. Glick says he's doing it from the heart despite hating the song. Ms. Glick suggests that he sing his parts in a lower key because he was noticeably struggling to hit some of the notes. She reminds him that his voice will be changing within a year or so and predicts that he'll have a versatile vocal range as a tenor or a baritone. A few weeks pass, and it's opening day for the school musical. Amy wonders if Flash has found his true passion, to which Sonic says he has because it's arts-related. As the show goes on, Amy subtly remarks that Flash sings much better than Sonic. Sonic agrees, adding that he's also having the time of his life dancing on stage. The show ends, and Flash takes his bow to raucous applause. The family congratulates Flash for his performance with Lightning admitting that he was particularly impressed. Lightning and Flash talk about the talents they inherited from their parents. Flash then says he can't wait until his voice changes so he can put his singing to good use. Lightning seems to think he'll sound like Whitey without the rasp from all the smoking he did. The only time they really heard Whitey was from the home movies Amy showed of him from near the end of his life. The episode ends with a flashback to 1959 where Whitey sings along to some rock and roll music sounding remarkably like Flash.
Fun Facts:
We learn that Flash loves to perform and is a reasonably good singer and dancer. We also learn that Amy was once in a school drama club presentation of Bye, Bye Birdie.
