Episode 589 - Hurricane Tails
Taped: 12/4/20
Plot:
Tails works on a circuit board while Miles and Sam play catch outside. Sam knocks the whiffle ball to kingdom come just as Tails burns himself with his soldering iron. The rest of the family checks on him, and Tails turns out to be fine aside from a huge blister. Cream and Miles ask Tails about the Tornado, and Tails decides that the time is right to tell them about the plane's history. He confesses that Sonic used to have a plane that they built from scratch which they called the Hurricane. Back in 1992, Tails suggests that Sonic's current plane isn't suitable for their needs and that they should have one built as a combination of stealth and speed instead of just the latter. After a few hours in the junkyard, they've assembled enough parts to build a working plane. Tails cleans up the engine and the carburetor, hoping it's enough for the plane to become mobile. With some encouragement from Sonic, Tails is able to get the plane to take off. Eggman watches the flight with Scratch and Grounder, and none of the three determine them to be a threat to their progress. Tails tries a touch and go landing, determining it to be a rocky success. Their next step is figuring out which weapons work, and they're able to equip a gun after some target practice. They also decide to paint it, and they make do with whatever cans they can find in an abandoned shed. The mix turns out to be a sickly green, but they have enough of it to coat the entire body. They decide to let the paint dry for the night just as Eggman sends Scratch and Grounder out on a mission. Scratch and Grounder sabotage every aspect of the plane, and then they disappear when Sonic and Tails come back to check on the paint. The next morning, Eggman taunts Sonic and Tails from the ground before he flies off in the Death Egg. Tails gives chase, but the plane malfunctions and they're forced to bail as it careens into a mountain. All seems lost, but then Sonic remembers that they can use his old biplane which he names the Tornado. Tails fixes it up, but it isn't viable for a passenger. Sonic jumps on the wing, promising Tails that he'll be careful. They take off, setting the stage for the Sky Chase Zone. Tails reminisces about what happened to the Tornado 1 a few years later. Tails and Sonic took to the skies after the Egg Carrier, only for Eggman to shoot it down and for the two to become separated. Miles asks if the Tornado 1 is still around, and Tails says that it and the Cyclone are both in storage. They go to Tails' old garage in the Mystic Ruins where they find both planes. Tails isn't sure that the Tornado 1 even works anymore, but he proves himself wrong when he starts it. He then gets the idea to surprise Sonic by flying it to him, so the gang piles into the plane together. They arrive at Emerald Avenue, and Sonic and Amy are impressed that Tails kept the plane in such good shape. Tails invites Sonic to jump on board, and they fly it back to Mystic Ruins. Tails discovers that the Hanson tape he left inside the deck still plays, much to Sonic's chagrin.
Fun Facts:
We learn that Tails still has his workshop in the Mystics Ruins but uses it for storage rather than living there and that he keeps the Tornado 1 and the Cyclone there.
