It's taking a huge step backwards. Years of developing a story line that's somewhat coherent, new revolutions in 3D technology, and now it's all being thrown away just to go back and make a fancy Sega Genesis game that's a sequel to a game that's already had tons of them. If this is what the fans really want, then they might as well watch reruns of Saved By the Bell 24/7 and use Internet Explorer 3.0 with dial-up internet on Windows 3.1. The only difference is they'd need to have an HD screen to do it. Sure there's 2D games on hand held systems that are fairly recent, but those are treated as a separate games and are limited to what the system can do. I fully admit I suck at the old 2D Sonic games, but that doesn't mean I don't like them. I just believe that in this day and age the 3D games have become the standard and have so much potential that I think it's foolish to turn back and go the other direction. Another big thing that irks me is the availability of this game being limited to those to have the ability to download it. What about the people who can't afford that feature? I personally think having gaming consoles that go online is the stupidest idea I've ever seen. Doesn't anybody have actual friends to play games with anymore? Must we rely on people we don't know in places we've never been just to have someone else to enjoy a game with? GO OUTSIDE AND MEET PEOPLE! NOT ALL OF THEM WANT TO KILL YOU! Also, what's wrong with buying a game in a store, playing that game, beating it, then just buying a new one? People used to trade games with the friends, cash them in at a used game store for this thing called money that seems to have been replaced by numbers registered on a plastic card, or even just rent them if they couldn't afford to buy them. Downloading a game isn't necessarily bad but what about those that don't have that option? Everything has to be on the internet these days. You can't buy anything good in stores anymore. Before you know it you won't be able to take a shit without banner ads. So I say to hell with this game, to hell with Sega, and to hell with all the fanboiz out there that think this game is a good idea.
