Episode 701 - Sounds Good to Me
Taped: 10/22/23
Plot:
A Sega executive calls Sonic into his office to discuss a new project they're working on. With the success of Sonic Frontiers, they are putting forth a new mobile game. This will require Sonic to come to the studio and do plenty of recording sessions. Sonic doesn't think he can handle it because of his schedule. The executive advises Sonic to think it over and come back tomorrow. Sonic tells Amy of the new project after she gets home. He then shows her the entire script he has to record, remarking that it will take at least 40 sessions to complete. Lightning comes over and looks at the script. He says one of Sonic's lines, and Flash mistakes him for Sonic from the next room over. Amy comes up with an idea: Sonic can bring Lightning to the studio and have him record Sonic's lines. Lightning is hesitant, but he agrees to help Sonic out since Flash already can't tell the two apart. Sonic takes Lightning to Sega's headquarters where he introduces Lightning to the executive. Lightning offers a few voice samples, and the executive likes what he hears. He invites Lightning to come to the studio for a few weeks after school to record. Lightning shows up for his first session, but the director thinks he sounds kind of young. Lightning asks what they can do to make him sound older, and the director forces him to smoke half a pack of cigarettes. He says a line just like Sonic, and the director thinks it's perfect. They wrap up their session with more recording and more cigarettes. Lightning comes home hacking and coughing, stopping for long enough to talk to his parents before going to his room. After another day or recording and cigarettes, he comes home and goes straight to bed. Sonic thinks he should talk to Lightning, but Amy says he needs his rest. The next day is a Saturday, and Lightning needs cigarettes to calm his nerves while playing a video game. Since he isn't 21 and he can't smoke at home, he asks Charmy for one. Charmy reluctantly agrees, and Lightning goes to Lucy's house. He uses an old Burger King cup for an ashtray on the way and greets Lucy on her porch swing. Lucy immediately senses that something's wrong with Lightning and tells him that he stinks of tobacco when he gets closer. Lightning comes clean with what has been happening to him since he started recording for Sonic. He was told that he wouldn't get hooked on cigarettes, but he's afraid that he already has. Lucy offers to calm him down with some pizza while they discuss how to tell Sonic and Amy. Lightning thanks her for being so understanding, and Lucy encourages him to beat his addiction. Amy discovers a lighter in Lightning's laundry and warns Sonic that it better not be what she thinks it is. Since he left the house without their knowing, Sonic goes off to find him. He discovers Lucy and Lightning talking outside her house and invites them into his truck. Lightning confesses everything that's been happening since he started recording for Sega. Sonic's convinced because of his behavior the days he came back from the recording sessions. However, the real test is getting it by Amy. Sonic goes in the house where Amy is ready to kick Lightning out for taking up smoking. Sonic says that if she doesn't believe Lightning, then he'll move out as well. Amy takes the chance and talks to Lightning and Lucy about it. She discovers that Lightning's telling the truth and goes off to Sega to hammer the executive into a coin. The following Monday, Lightning is in the studio again but this time having his natural voice filtered through an AI with the executive having a noticeably hammered head. Lightning comes back from recording feeling much better. He then has a heart-to-heart with Amy, telling her the he understands why she was so upset. He realizes it's because Amy lost Whitey at such a young age, and that he has his whole life ahead of him that he doesn't want to ruin by smoking. Lightning then goes to his room where Lucy is waiting for him. He says he wants to practice a good habit instead and pulls out a condom. They then go downstairs to have pizza with the family. A few weeks later, the game is out and Lightning is showing it off to Lucy. The game turns out to be awful, but Lightning isn't complaining since he's in it. Lightning is proud to be absolved of his addiction, and says he's even prouder to be addicted to Lucy.
