Episode 666 - Sick Riffs
Taped: 11/27/22
Plot:
Lightning is sick in bed with the flu. Amy goes to get him some medicine and comes across Sonic, Manic, and Sonia along the way. Sonic is trying to write a new song ahead of Manic and Sonia already composing the music. Sonic recommends the same kind of cough syrup he took when he was sick the year before. Amy thinks he might be ready and buys him some. Lightning takes the medicine, then Amy goes downstairs where Sonic remains in the same creative funk. Even Knuckles can't find any inspiration. Amy offers to take everybody to lunch, so they all go to Popeye's and leave Lightning behind. The cough syrup doesn't seem to be working, so Lightning takes another dose. He then goes downstairs and sees Sonic's notes and the band's unattended instruments. He takes some more medicine and starts playing on Manic's drums and Sonia's keyboard. He also starts recording, finishing the bottle in the meanwhile. He leaves the house to get more, only to be told his purchase is age-restricted. He turns a display into a ball, and the cashier rings him up. He downs his second bottle and starts recording some more. With all the instruments in sync, he improvises words to Sonic's song. He writes down what he has and edits the tracks into a song. He's about to finish when he crashes from so much cough syrup. He has just enough time to collapse into bed when everyone comes back from Popeye's. Amy notices a weird smell of alcohol, cherries, and sweat, and Sonic notices a sound file open on the computer. He plays it and the band is surprised to hear a mostly completed song. They note that the singer sounds suspiciously like an aged-down version of Sonic. They check on Lightning who is too comatose to respond. The band and Knuckles leave him alone and improvise the song along to the lyrics written on Sonic's notepad. A few hours later, Amy checks in on the group. Amy compliments them on their song, but they also decide to show her the original recording. Amy thinks it might be Lightning, but then they discover empty bottles of cough syrup. Sonic decides to have a talk, but Amy and the band thinks he should go easy because he was the one who suggested the cough syrup in the first place. Sonic takes a different route and when Lightning finally wakes up, has him listen to both recordings. Lightning doesn't even remember recording or mixing the instruments. Sonic assures Lightning that he isn't mad, but if he wants to help the band out, he should either ask or not get sick. A few days pass, and Sonic shows Amy another recording of the song. This one has Lightning singing a descant and playing an acoustic guitar along with the rest of the band. The band tells Amy that Lightning has formally been introduced as a new member. The next day, Megan listens to the song at school and talks to Lucy and Lightning about it. Lightning gets a notification on his phone about a new upload, and it turns out to be a let's play uploaded to his channel that Sonic recorded while high on cough syrup.
