Episode 516 - What's in a Name?
Taped: 4/5/19
Plot:
Amy walks in on Flash doing his homework which is about half done because it's an assignment about how he got his name. He has already written a part about his first since "Flash" is an easy name to write about. Amber is finished since she was partially named after Amy for alliteration and her middle name being Rose for that side of her family. Lightning knows his middle name is Hawkeye because Sonic is a huge fan of M*A*S*H which Flash thinks is a show about potatoes. Flash asks why his middle name is Oswald, and Amy says it was her mother Elaine's maiden name. She then says "Oswald" has an extraordinary place in her family naming as well. After Elaine gave birth to Jenny, Whitey picks her first name after his great aunt while Elaine, still feeling loopy from her epidural, settles on "Oswald" as an unusual middle name from her side of the family for Jenny. Amy invites Jenny to talk more about her middle name, and she recants an anecdote where she revealed it to her kindergarten class when her teacher asked about it. She was laughed out of the classroom and excused from school early because she was so upset. As she got older, she was teased less about her masculine middle name. However, it got her in trouble after high school when her full name was written wrong on a form. She was nearly drafted by the army before her mother cleared up the misunderstanding. She then reveals a dark secret about her family name: they are distant relatives of Lee Harvey Oswald, John F. Kennedy's assassin. This worries Flash at first, but it convinces him to ask Jenny what Elaine was doing when Kennedy got shot. Jenny calls up Elaine who explains that she was at Woolworth's eating lunch with her mother at the time. Elaine's mother tells her that her family's connection to Lee Harvey Oswald is too ambiguous for them to be related. Elaine tells Flash that it shouldn't matter if he shares a name with a criminal because she never saw her maiden name that way. She then adds that everyone is named something for a good reason. However, she accidentally admits that Whitey came close to naming Jenny "Wilbureena" as he wanted to name his first-born son Wilbur Jr., but she put her foot down on that. Having had enough material to write about his middle name, Amy takes one last look at the material of both his essay and Amber's. Flash thanks Jenny and Elaine for their help before leaving to finish his assignment. The next day, Mrs. Henderson compliments Flash on the lengths he took explaining his middle name of Oswald, even drawing the connection it had with John F. Kennedy. Because he did such a great job on his essay, Amy has Flash pick where they will eat for dinner that night. Flash remembers how Jenny keeps confusing getting Sonic's name confused, so he has the family go to Stanley's in Station Square. The episode closes with a flashback to 1984 where Whitey considers something cigarette-themed before settling on Amy as a name.
Fun Facts:
Flash's middle name of Oswald is revealed to be taken after his grandmother's maiden name. It's revealed that Whitey had very different names in mind for Jenny and Amy, all vetoed by Elaine.
