Episode 507 - Simmer Down, Student
Taped: 1/11/19
Plot:
Lightning calls Sonic over for a father-son conversation because he's worried about school. His old shop teacher Mr. Kroger had to retire at the end of the second semester, and he's heard rumors about his replacement Mr. Wosniak who is a former marine. Other kids on the bus have told Lightning the Mr. Wosniak is strict and that he has destroyed his students' electronics for using them during class. Lightning considers transferring to a different class instead because he liked his old shop teacher and is scared of the rumors floating around his new one. Having heard the conversation, Amy steps in and recants an experience she had with her old teacher. She submitted an essay on Sonic's heroism, only to be given an F due to her own bias against him. She transferred to another teacher who was much more easygoing due to being a hippie. Amy and Sonic tells Lightning to give Mr. Wosniak at least one day, on the basis that if he doesn't like the teacher he can always transfer. Lightning thanks his parents for being supportive and agrees to give him a shot. Lightning spends the last 15 minutes of lunchtime frozen in fear at meeting Mr. Wosniak until the bell rings. He meets Billy in class before Mr. Wosniak introduces himself to the students. It turns out the rumors about him were overblown: He hated being in the marines, and the electronics he destroyed were only two separate accidents. They were spread by troublemakers due to his high school students being more problematic than middle school students. He also let his good students get creative, allowing one to customize the dashboard of his car. At this point, he calls over Lightning who had the highest grades in Mr. Kroger's fifth period. Mr. Wosniak reviews the two projects he did for the first two quarters and expresses interest in the cabinet he has in mind for the third, even offering his own input to which Lightning accepts. Lightning then comes home from school and tells his parents about how cool Mr. Wosniak is, saying he had nothing to worry about all this time. He also thanks them for being so supportive before leaving to start on his next project. Amy tells Sonic that she has saved all their kids' schoolwork in the attic, showing him how long Lightning has come ever since his first picture from kindergarten. They then close out the episode with Sonic's request that Amy has finally fulfilled: taco night.
Fun Facts:
It's revealed that Lightning is good with his hands and is very adept at both drawing and building.
