Episode 501 - Level Zero
Taped: 11/11/18
Plot:
Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles look through Sega's storage units for any interesting finds where they come across several discarded games, even ones Sonic was embarrassed to star in like Sonic's Schoolhouse. Knuckles finds a colonoscopy instructional video which Sonic must have made while Sonic Shuffle was in progress because he doesn't remember a thing about it, other than it was entirely in Japanese. They then find other cartridges, including a Nick Arcade prototype of Sonic 2 before it was released to the public. They then find a Genesis cartridge of a lost game called Sonic Bubble Bounce from 1996 and play the first level. Knuckles thinks the game has potential so he has Sonic bring it to Sega's executives, thinking they may have the next big thing after Sonic Mania. Sonic presents his idea to executives from Sega of America but they are disinterested in the game and don't even remember making it. Sonic shrugs it off and decides to find someone else interested in it. He takes the game to Sega of Japan who also have no idea about its existence and express no interest in releasing it. Becoming increasingly frustrated, Sonic turns to Traveller's Tales who formerly made Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R and even they won't take on the project. After several failed attempts to get the game released even going so far as to contact Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, Sonic has just about reached wits end. Knuckles suggests that Sonic go visit Yuji Naka as he was one of the lead programmers and may be able to help their cause. Sonic seeks him out and after days of searching, finally finds him at Square Enix. There, Sonic asks Yuji why Sonic Bubble Bounce was never released, and Yuji explains that it was simply made as a training tool for new Sega programmers but became obsolete once Sonic Team's focus was shifted to 3D games. Yuji further explains that while the game in itself is pretty decent, it was never meant to see the light of day and should be left as such. He shows off the copy he saved as a memento of his time with Sega and advises Sonic to go with whatever Sega has in store for the future rather than worry about remnants of the past. Sonic heads back where he finds Knuckles with the cartridge they found saying he gave it a full play-through and found it to be half decent at best. They decide to hang on to it as it's a neat part of Sega's history as well as several of the other cartridges and disks they found. Knuckles then decides to play the weird DVD from before again, this time with the English subtitles, finding it even more hilarious to which Sonic can only roll his eyes.
