Episode 412 - Halloween or Hallelujah?
Taped 10/30/16
Plot:
A group of protesters from the Great Church of Westborough plow their way into Station Square's mayor's office days before Halloween. They are calling a ban on the holiday because it encourages praising the devil and ask that they spread the good word door to door instead of trick or treating. The mayor is indifferent to this idea but the mob convinces him that the townspeople don't want their city to have the devil represent them. Afraid of potential repercussions, the mayor caves in and cancels Halloween for Station Square. When Sonic hears about this, he promises to the mayor that he will do everything he can to unban Halloween no matter the cost. Amy agrees with Sonic on the basis that everybody gets too offended to celebrate what they like. She suggests having the children celebrate Halloween as they normally do and that she and Sonic will get involved if they are threatened. Lightning and Flash call up Lucy and Platinum respectively, thinking they will help. As the kids change into their costumes, the Westborough Church arrives at their door to introduce themselves, spread the good word and invite them to their open house. Amy lies that they're Pagan and shoos them away by telling them they're making a sacrifice. With the children dressed up for Halloween, they go outside where they meet up with Lucy and Platinum who are also dressed to go trick or treating. They stop by Ms. Penny's house first and they ask her to help save Halloween when the Westborough mob shows up. Ms. Penny distracts them by flashing her rainbow pasties but this has no affect as the mob shoots holy water at the kids. Lightning shields them with his fake guitar and holds off the attack as the rest of the kids retreat inside Ms. Penny's house until they run out of water. The pasties she was wearing before give her an idea so she goes outside and tells the mob the true spirit of Halloween. She lectures that Halloween is about good fun and not about raising the devil when her husband comes out dressed as Borat in a slingkini. He then tells the mob that neither he nor her wife grew up to worship the devil but they don't listen, telling the couple that they and the children will burn in hell. The children then launch an attack on the mob with eggs, toilet paper, silly string, tomatoes, and ammunition from their costumes. Cream then arrives on a bicycle and rides through the mob, causing them to disperse and finally retreat. The other neighborhood children then walk out of their homes dressed in their costumes as does Amy who congratulates the kids for saving Halloween. Lightning says that Ms. Penny taught them a valuable lesson: if you stand up for what's right, you can do amazing things. The group then goes trick-or-treating and Lightning plays a song on his guitar, prompting Amy to think Lightning inherited Sonic's tone deafness.
Fun Facts:
Ms. Penny is seen for the first time since Lightning and Lucy had her as their teacher and Mr. Penny is seen for his very first time in the series. Lightning was dressed as an elderly Johnny Cash, Flash as The Joker, Amber as Serena from Pokémon, Sonic Jr. as Pikachu, Platinum as The Mask, Lucy as Sailor Moon, Ms. Penny as Glinda the Good Witch of the North, Mr. Penny as Borat, Cream as a Tour de France racer, and Amy as Lara Croft. Lightning sings the last 2 verses of "Man in Black" to tie in with the lesson he took away from Ms. Penny. "The Great Church of Westborough" is a reference to the "Westboro Baptist Church." All the kids made continuous puns related to their costumes.
