Episode 408 - Can't Kid the Kids
Taped 10/2/16
Plot:
Lightning asks Sonic why he cut himself shaving and Sonic says he keeps forgetting he's a hedgehog. He is then joined by Flash and Amber and the three wonder why they don't appear in any Sega games. Sonic says that his current contract doesn't permit them from appearing for liability reasons. However, since his renegotiation is coming soon, he can ask his executives if they can start appearing since they're a little older. The next day, an executive starts going over negotiating Sonic's contract when Sonic informs that his kids may be ready to start appearing in games. After extensively reminding Sonic of Sega's policy for keeping things consistent including Sonic's age and relationship status, the executive tells Sonic he's willing to give him a chance to have his kids on a B-listed release. If the project is successful, the executive will give Sonic's kids their own line of games. Sonic comes home to an angry Amy who calls him out on roping their children into appearing in their own game. Cream walks in and the three talk about how it will put not only his reputation on the line but also their children because of the fandom's ongoing shipping wars. Sonic brings his four children to the Sega studio the next day to have their bodies scanned for computer generation. The rest of the day is spent voice acting, including numerous takes until the sound technician gets the voices he needs. They then return to another studio the following day to act out the scenes before post production. One week later, Sonic gets a demo disc of Sonic: The Next Generation in the mail to the delight of his children. They pop the game in and watch the opening cutscenes featuring an afternoon with Sonic and the kids interrupted by Eggman's next scheme. After they play it through, clunky controls, cheesy cutscenes and all, Lightning considers it to be an awful effort. He claims the difficulty is screwy, the story was bland and they used the worst takes from their voice acting. Sonic then agrees, saying he shouldn't have rushed his kids to stardom and apologizes for pushing them so hard. Lightning says they can keep the game so they can look back on it and laugh together. The family still treats it as a learning experience in a way that their kind of story is too far fetched to market a good game. For now, Amy offers to take everybody out for ice cream to celebrate them getting their own game. She pulls Sonic aside and thanks them for at least incorporating realism into their desire for celebrity status.
