Episode 364 - Nine? Nein!
Taped: 11/15/15
Plot:
Sonic has flown his family to Berlin through commercial air but their bags accidentally wound up in Munich. As they retrieve their passports from Sonic's carry-on, Lightning reveals he accidentally left his in his suitcase. Amy isn't worried since they can simply have their bags flown in from Munich in a mere two hours and figures they'll understand Lightning's situation and allow him to enter the country in the meantime. Sonic then arranges for a rental car which has to be a station wagon since Germany doesn't have minivans. The rental clerk convinces Sonic to instead rent a Volkswagen Thing which Amy immediately hates. Rather than wait for the plane to arrive with their luggage, they decide to go through customs where they meet a nasty German guard who doesn't speak English. After a long serious of questions, he asks if Lightning is traveling with his parents. Lightning mistakes it for being asked his age and answers "nine". The guard, thinking he said "nein" instead has him arrested on the spot. Sonic and Amy take the rest of the kids to the hotel where they contact the American embassy. To Sonic's horror, he finds out from the embassy that Lightning is about to be deported to Japan because of Sonic's supposed Japanese background. Amy calls Cream in Station Square so they can track down the holding facility where Lightning is located. The guard at the facility can only rely on the paperwork that customs provided him and can only send Lightning back with his parents if he proves that Sonic is actually his father. Lightning assumes the guard likes David Hasselhoff, as he is German, and tries to coax him into setting him free in exchange for an autograph. The guard instead agrees to free him if Sonic beats up David Hasselhoff whom he has a grudge against. It turns out David Hasselhoff is actually in Germany and bumps into Sonic and family. By coincidence, he knows exactly where Lightning is and offers to drive them there in their rental car. Just as they're about to leave, a delivery man from the airport arrives and explains that a software glitch caused their bags to be falsely flagged as being in Munich when they were actually just really slow to get off the plane. They get to the holding facility with Lightning's passport where Lightning happily reunites with his parents. Sonic is true to his word and David Hasselhoff willingly obliges to be beaten up by him. The family is ready to call it quits and head back home but Lightning wants to stay and enjoy his birthday vacation. They agree to spend time and have Lightning's party in Germany before returning home. Sonic and Amy agree that weirdness follows them wherever they go and through it all, they try to make the most of it.
