Episode 198 - I Remember When Croc was Young
Taped: 8/19/2012
Plot:
It's a boring, rainy day and the Chaotix are bored due to a lack of cases to solve and decide to hold a jam session. Not wanting to leave out their lead guitarist, they call Eric over to join. Swen, wanting in on the action, asks if he can play piano with them which they happily agree. Meanwhile, Vector and Vanilla are out grocery shopping while Charisma gets a case of the "I Want This" which royally annoys everyone else in the store. As the band gets set up to play, Swen suggests a song to play and sing while they wait for Vector to return. Espio and Charmy mull it over and with Eric's insistence, they agree to play a rendition of Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" thinking it would be humorous for Vector to walk in and hear it. They begin to play just as Vector and Vanilla enter with the groceries. Upon hearing what song Swen is singing, Vector drops the bags he's carrying, goes into a fit of rage, and smashes Swen's piano which frightens everyone in the room and causes a dead silence. He then breaks into a cold sweat and runs out of the house in a panic into the city. A confused Vanilla ponders why Vector would do such a thing. A shaken Swen is taken home by Eric who threatens to quit Chaotix if Vector's rage isn't addressed. Not wanting to lose their best guitarist since Ray, the remaining members of Espio, Charmy, and Mighty set off into the storm to look for Vector and get to the bottom of this unprecedented rage. Meanwhile, deep in the heart of the city, Sonic and Metal Sonic are at it again. This time, Metal has upgraded his processor to a multi-core and is now stronger than ever. As Sonic dishes out his best attacks, Vector literally bumps into him causing Metal Sonic to strike them both down. Vector then assists Sonic in the battle and, after some quick maneuvering, the duo take down Metal, remove his new processor and drop it into a puddle causing it to short rendering it useless. Sonic thanks Vector but questions him as to why he was running in the first place. Vector then breaks down into tears confusing Sonic even more. The rest of the Chaotix arrive on the scene and demand an explanation. Realizing his actions were uncalled for, Vector apologizes and reveals that he has a deep, dark secret. The story goes into flashback mode as Vector recalls his youth. Long before Chaotix was even a thought, Vector was just an average crocodile who attended Swampbush Elementary just outside of the small town in which he grew up. The year was 1982 and young Vector was at home watching a rerun of The Muppet Show, one of his favorite TV shows, when who should appear but Elton John singing the very same song that started this whole ordeal. Upon seeing and hearing it, young Vector finds it nothing short of awesome to hear a song about crocodiles. The next day at school, he's singing it to himself through the halls of the school when the other kids all take notice and begin to tease him by all singing the "La-La" part of the song over and over again while pointing and laughing at the young crocodile. Feeling low and ashamed, young Vector runs home to his mother and father, crying and swearing never to return to school again. As the flashback ends, Vector explains that his parents were left with no choice but to transfer him to another school where he could make new friends and recover from his traumatic experience. He then goes on to explain that ever since that day, that song has haunted him. Sonic comforts Vector by assuring him that it's all in the past and that such a silly song isn't worth getting upset over. Vector admits that Sonic is exactly right and swears to confront his fear once and for all, but not before regaining Eric's trust and making amends with Swen. The remaining Chaotix are relieved to have the old Vector back and decide to help him on his mission by going to the music shop and buying Swen a new piano. The next day, they invite Swen and Eric to return which they hesitantly agree to. Vector quickly apologizes to Swen and explains the situation to him. Swen and Eric accept Vector's apology and the entire Chaotix band breaks out into the song again which triggers Vector's memory of watching Elton John sing it 30 years prior and, for the first time since, he feels good about it and starts to sing and dance along as Vanilla smiles and joins him planting a kiss on him as Charisma squeals and claps with delight.
