Episode 189 - The Man in Black and Red
Taped: 6/3/12
Sonic, Amy and Cream are huddled around Shadow's unconscious body, unknown as to how he wound up that way. Amy thinks about calling 911 but then decides it may be better to let Shadow die and respawn, Sonic suggests taking him to the hospital and Cream agrees with Amy that they should just let him die. After much deliberation, Sonic calls the morgue to help transport Shadow. The three then eat dinner together, confident that they all made the right decision. Shadow then miraculously wakes up in the middle of the street completely lost as to who he is and how he wound up in his current state. When he sees Charmy with a bag of drugs, he instantly assumes he is a country singer and that he can't perform unless he has a hat. Upon searching his wallet for clues, he notices his old name, Shadow, is too dark and instead decides to go as Johnny Debit. He also believes it's time to get a guitar so he can start performing. He notices Manic walking and recruits his help in order to begin his career. Shadow takes offense when Manic calls him his original name which makes Manic confused as to why he needs his help. Manic helps him buy a cowboy hat at Gimbels and they meet Sonia after walking out of the store. Johnny Debit introduces himself to Sonia and she doesn't recognize who he really is. When Manic reveals his identity, "Johnny" again takes exception. They find a music store in Station Square and "Johnny" finds his guitar so he can get started. He leaves to write songs, leaving Manic and Sonia awestruck. He goes back to the spot where he woke up and begins composing music. His singing attracts the attention of Cream, Sonic and Amy who ponder why he is doing such a thing. After finishing his song, he tells the gathering crowd that he is Johnny Debit. Amy accepts him for who he is but Sonic can't believe his transformation. Amy offers for "Johnny" to move in so he can jump-start his career, much to Sonic's chagrin. Amy explains why country music can be uplifting and that Shadow has proven he truly has changed. Sonic feels unsafe now that Shadow is living in his house and refuses to go to bed unless he takes extra precautions. Amy talks him out of it when she threatens to call him his real name. Early the next morning, "Johnny" is still singing to himself, prompting Amy to confess it was better when Shadow was evil. She then brings up it was much worse when they had Randy Newman living next door which brings back bad memories for Sonic. Sonic hops out of bed to have a talk with "Johnny" and to his horror, he discovers Randy and "Johnny" playing music together. They both collaborated on writing more than 400 songs, including an impromptu one inspired by Sonic falling down the basement stairs. Randy also announces his record company has hired "Johnny" to a contract and they both leave for the studio. The next morning, Sonic wakes up to discover his favorite radio station has switched to an all-country format starting with a new song by "Johnny" and Randy. Sonic destroys his alarm clock in rage during his failed attempts to turn it off. Meanwhile, "Johnny's" act has taken Mobius by storm, he has been invited on Rachel Ray and is edited into reruns of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. Sonia gets an idea from an old Disney cartoon that all they have to do to get Shadow back to normal is whack him on the head once more. They discover he is playing at the Grand Ole Opry that night. They hide on the catwalk while he is performing and Sonic Underground begins an act of their own, dropping an anvil on his head in the meanwhile. The crowd becomes restless and the heroes leave while Shadow slowly comes to. On the news, Johnny Debit is revealed to be missing and presumed dead after he escaped from the hospital. Suddenly, there is a knock on the door and Shadow appears dressed as Rob Zombie...only to reveal his true self and why he will never do country music for the rest of his life. Everyone is mysteriously relieved to have the old Shadow back until Amy admits she will keep his greatest hits on her iPod. Charmy then arrives, lamenting that he will never attain the same disillusion that Shadow once had. Sonic then tricks him into getting hit in the head by Amy's hammer, causing him to sing opera.
